Brewing Beginners

Published March 9, 2012 by jenmatteson

Starting in January, we began our beer brewing adventure.  We really didn’t have a clue what we were doing, what we needed, or how to get started, but the guys at Midwest Supplies were more than helpful.  Nate had a Groupon for a starter kit, which included all the basics of brewing.  However, this wasn’t all we needed, at least if we wanted our beer to be any good, oh, and drink it out of something other than directly out of the fermenter.  Here is a list of our shopping items:

  • 5 Gallon Better Bottle
  • 6.5 Gallon Plastic Fermenter with Lid
  • 6.5 Gallon Bottling Bucket with Spigot
  • 8 oz. Easy Clean No-Rinse Cleanser
  • Airlock
  • Hydrometer
  • Bottle brush
  • Twin Lever Black Beauty Capper
  • Bottle Caps
  • Liquid Crystal Thermometer
  • Bottle Filler
  • Siphon Tubing
  • 7 Gallon Brew Kettle
  • Wort Chiller
  • Boiling Bag
  • Dial Thermometer
  • 24-22 oz bottles

Before we start brewing, we’ll need something to brew! We picked up two brew kits, Irish Red Ale and Mexican Cerveza.  The kits are basically for beginners like us.  They include the exact amount of grains, malt, hops, and yeast for a particular beer along with basic instructions.

Now we’re ready to start brewing!  Stay tuned as we clumsily stumble through our first brewing experience.
